Kathy A's recent query has forced me to come forth on the Net with my own
suggestion for a name for the "alternative".
I don't like formula either because it makes it sound more scientific than
it deserves - although it has a solid 19th Century origin from Boston, where
Dr. Rotch created many different "formulas" for infants and had them made in
laboratories - both "formula" and "laboratory" have stuck.
I also don't like ABM - since it really stands for Academy of Breastfeeding
Medicine.
Following the dairy industry's own standard for the naming of dairy products
and especially manufactured cheeses (in contrast to natural cheeses), I
would propose the following name:  Processed Infant Milk Product.
