The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses
(AWHONN) is the professional organization for American nurses who
specialize in these nursing disciplines. They have outdone themselves
in an a free publication (I believe it is new) for the public called
Healthy Mom Baby. It adorns our waiting rooms. While it may have some
merit in other areas for expectant and new parents, the breastfeeding
education is woeful (or maybe awful is a better word). The inside cover
has a double layout ad for a formula. Then you can read the one article
in the most current issue entitled "Are You a Combo Mom?". It is
written by a pediatrician and speaks to breastfeeding and bottle feeding
for the back to work mother. This pediatrician astutely never mentions
the word formula in her interview. However, the interviewer does state
that being a "combo mom" who nurses and bottle feeds either breastmilk
or formula shows "how a little practicality can sustain nursing in busy
lives". The interviewer is Carolyn Davis Cockey, editor of the magazine
and director of publications for the above nursing organization. I
would advise anyone who comes in contact with this lovely little piece
of commercial propaganda to find the nearest shreader.
