I asked that question of the midwife when we did our postpartum visits
yesterday. Her experience (over 400 home births) is that milk comes in by 72
hours.

What I noticed is that we don't see the drop in weight that is common
otherwise.

Baby A, born 3 weeks ago, left the hospital down 5 ounces in 2 days. Baby B,
born at home 13 days ago, has gained 24 ounces. Baby C, born at home 3 days
ago, has gained 3 ounces.

All three women were/are determined to breastfeed, but the first had to
fight through routines, nursery visits and critical people. Now that the
first mother is home, baby is gaining better.
