I have been off lactnet for almost two years. I am a hospital based LC
and currently working on my MSN/FNP through Cal. State Dominquez Hills.
I have three questions that I need answers to.
What is chicken hair?
Does anyone have a new phone number for Dr. Phil Anderson's UCSD drug
info. service? I've been informed that 1-900-288-8273 has been
disconnected.
I recently had an unpleasant experience with another hospital LC who
called requesting info. on phenobarb and mom's breastmilk. When I spoke
with Dr. Hale several years ago at the ILCA conference he suggested that
the AHL(adult elimination half life) be multiplied by 5 in drugs
unacceptable to breastfeeding, in order to determine when mom can resume
nursing after d/c the med. Our hospital pharmacists used the same
formula with regards to phenobarb. The LC was unhappy/upset with this
answer and demanded I explain the reasoning to her. I am an RN/LC not a
pharmacist which is why I depend on the expertise of Dr. Hale and
others. If someone has the knowledge to explain why the half life is
multiplied by 5, I'd be grateful and would pass this on to the LC
mentioned. Thanks in advance, Dawn Staudt-Vanek.
