Amantadine - given to children ages 1-10. May affect prolactin levels.
Hale says avoid.
Rimantadine - given to children >1 year. Hale says no effects seen in BF
babies. Use with tylenol reduces effectiveness of med.
Zanamivir- limited efficacy (ie: doesn't work too well) so use in BF moms
probably not warranted unless high risk pt with other 'severe' medical
conditions.
Oseltamivir - also limited efficacy. Unknown if in milk, but prob low.
These abbreviated reviews are from Hale. All anti-virals only claim to
reduce disease by a day or 2 :-( She probably did the best thing in getting
her flu vac, however everyone in her household (20 mo included) should get
flu vac to protect mom.(opinion of CDC - not me)
Please don't go into a discussion, pro or con vaccinations!
Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
