I'm thinking this is only sorta off topic.

I have a family member who is having serious medical problems. A few
months ago she had her colon removed, she has been having major problems
for years and years, and it finally came to a head. She is about 5 foot
9 and weighs probably 80 pounds, she looks anorexic or like a
concentration camp victim. It's really horrid. She was loosing weight
with the bleeding and constant diarrhea. After she had her colon
removed, she did a bit better (once she got over the bag issue), gained
a bit of weight, and is now working her way back up, but it's been
tough. I don't know why I didn't think of it before, but this weekend I
finally realized that maybe some breastmilk would help. One of the
issues is that without a colon everything goes through very fast, so
nutrients are not absorbed. You also can't eat bulky foods, no fresh
vegies, no whole wheat breads, no fruit, etc. Dairy has been hard too.
Anyway... Tomorrow she goes in to have the bag removed and her
intestines reconnected to her rectum. This is a big step (she had to
have regained a bit of health in order to get to this place, but she's
still far from being back to "normal"). For a few months, her diet will
be very limited, and then she can slowly add things. I was thinking if
she had some breastmilk that might help. She's going to talk to her
doctor about a prescription, but today the nurse really turned her off
to that, saying her insurance would not cover it (not necessarily true)
and it wouldn't work anyway. I disagree, obviously.

At this point, I would like to provide to my family member with some
resources on the use of breastmilk with adults. Articles she could
share with her doctor would be vital. I have been able to find a few
resources, does anyone have more? Also, how can she convince her doctor
that breastmilk will help her heal and not loose weight again during the
next few months. Finally, how can we get insurance to pay for this?

Any advice would be very helpful.

Joylyn
