Thank you to whoever posted this analogy recently. I actually used it to try
to help a mother understand why, when she stopped nursing her 3 1/2 month old
baby before naps, and substituted a pacifier, he also began refusing to nurse
when he woke up, as well as cutting down nursing at other times as well. We
talked about how it might have to do with a normal developmental pattern change
for him, early teething, increased efficiency, perhaps, or be related to some
emotional reaction to "losing that more intimate way of being lovingly fed".
We talked a long time, about many possibilities, the wide range of normal
needs babies have for touch, nurturing, as well as feeding. The idea that "two
minutes of nursing and I know he wasn't really getting anything" before naps
likened to saying that a brief hug before bedtime from her partner wasn't
providing her any calories but it certainly was providing something, plus the
celibate marriage analogy seemed to help in some way...
so thanks again and sorry I didn't write down who said it, feel free to
remind me here or privately...:)
