Cheryl's case made me think that a thorough checkup by a chiropractor might
find something similar- birth trauma or just a cramped space in utero.

Subject: side lying position only

As regards side lying position only: My third child was like that . It
was 4-5 months before I could nurse her in any other position. She also
was delayed lifting up her head. We took her to an orthopedist and he
diagnosed a tight and swollen ligament in her neck. It turns out it was
from birth trauma. She was a "sunny-side up" baby who was taking "too
long" to be born. So the doctor reached in with forceps and turned her .
Apparently a ligament was stretched and slightly ripped in the process.
Of course no one knew this for months and thought she was just "'colicky
and finicky" . We all carried her everywhere (she seldom was put down) .
And Inursed her so often, she was 21 lbs at 7 months old. Luckily I
responded to her needs even though I Didn't know why. So always in
colicky, finicky babies I tell moms "She may have issues we don't know
about now, or may never know about. But she's not just being
demanding...she has needs..and it won't last forever". Now my third
child is a lovely 5foot 10 inches 130 lb 18 year old woman, with no neck
problems , self-confident and just won a full 4 year scholarchip at a
nearby university.
Alls well that ends well,
Cheryl Muller RNC IBCLC
