My question is how you instill in a new mother that she is
capable of breastfeeding. Also as a nurse and a sister how can I show
my support and help to boost her confidence

First and foremost I would put her in touch with a local La Leche League
Leader/group. She needs mother to mother support. To SEE that she IS capable
of breastfeeding, that it isn't as much work as she has been led to believe.
Since she is your sister, I would buy her a copy of "The Womanly Art of
Breastfeeding" by La Leche League, and "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of
Answers" by Jack Newman and Teresa Pitman. As a mom, no other books were more
helpful to me, and I hold both in high regards. I suggest she read them cover to
cover BEFORE her baby comes so that she can speak up for herself in the
hospital, with CORRECT information to back it up. (Put those books in that
hospital bag!!!)

Good luck to your sister, she is lucky to have a sister like you who is so
supportive, and ready to start out her new baby's life on a good path. :)

PS I have a neat article written by a formula feeding mom that documents how
"not" easy formula feeding is compared to breastfeeding. Email me off list
if you would like a copy for your sister.
