Hi Judy,

At our children's hospital, we have a breastfeeding order set. If we admit a breastfed child or one with a mother who is pumping, the child's physician, nurse, or dietician orders a "breastfeeding mom tray". The order stays in place until discharge or weaning. The mom can call down and order a tray just as any older patient would do. I believe she can order 3 meals per day plus a couple of snacks.

In the NICU, the tray is delivered to the family lounge because we don't allow food in the baby's rooms. The person who delivers the tray calls in to the NICU and we let the mom know it is there.

In the rest of the hospital, the tray is delivered to the child's room. The mom can eat it there or take it to the lounge on that floor.
