I would really appreciate some help for this mother. Baby is now 10
weeks old. Mother has a very forceful milk ejection reflex, initially
linked with oversupply as she also had with her 1st baby. From the
beginning baby strugggled with the rapid MER although for the 2-3
weeks she was able to settle between feeds. Mother's milk supply was
reduced by using block feeding, often with up to 10-12 hour stretches
on one breast. However, the forceful milk ejection persisted & baby
struggled with feeds despite trying many different feeding positions.
By the 4th week the baby was distressed & crying for much of the day &
needed to be carried in upright positions. Mother then decided to
express her milk & bottle feed in order to make the feeds more
comfortable for baby. Dr prescribed infant gaviscon which was added to
all bottle feeds along with lipase drops. Baby was able to tolerate
some feeds on the breast after mom had expressed.
Baby was more settled with this regime apart from colicky episodes
which she experiences for about 2 hours every evening.
As there is a 2 year old sibling it is becoming increasingly difficult
to manage expressing, caring for a baby who needs to be carried for
much of the time & looking after an active toddler. As she feels it is
becoming impractical to continue expressing & bottle feeding she
tried to resume full breastfeeding but this has resulted in a
distressed & uncomfortable baby once more. She is also trying CST
although has only had one session so far.
Mom also has dysphoric milk ejection reflex. Are there any links
between D MER & forceful milk ejection ? I wasn't able to find any
discussion on this topic. Would be very grateful for suggestions or
advice in dealing these issues.
This mother/ baby are my daughter & grand daughter which is making it
even more difficult to deal with objectively as I see all the emotions
involved.
Many thanks.
