Patricia Gima and Joy Anderson- Thanks for your help. I think we diagnosed
correctly. When I went to visit and assess, baby did beautifully. Mother's
milk had slowed down quite a bit in 24 hours, and he was managing well with
lots of sucks and swallows, but no milk leaking from mouth. She stated that
this one of his best feedings yet (of course!). However, something else came
up in conversation. She mentioned she was to see the ped that afternoon,
should she mention all this? "And, by the way, he loves his vitamin drops."
HIS WHAT? I couldn't believe it. I told her that vitamins often cause
fussiness, upset belly, etc. She could not get him to nurse lying down
during the day, but had wonderful night feedings in her bed. Here was the
day's schedule- vitamin drops after morning feeding, feedings and fussiness
worsen throughout the day, horrible in afternoon and evening, nights great.
I talked to her hubby today. He said she did not give vitamins yesterday or
today, and everyone is doing much better!! I just hate that I didn't think
of it. I knew our peds used to give vitamins at 1 mo. but I thought they
didn't do that anymore. It seems they have no rhyme or reason as to whom
they prescribe them to. And, she is one of the healthiest people I know. I
keep kicking myself. It was so simple, yet I keep looking for the complex.
AAAARRRRGGGGHH!
