While researching how to make a donation towards disaster relief in the
Philippines, I came across this odd page on the World Vision website. (I
had found World Vision based on Karleen' Gribble's recommendation of their
work on infant feeding in emergencies.)

The page makes it sound as though malnourished infants prefer this formula
to mother's milk, and as though this particular formula is somehow very
special. It prompts so many questions (why is a breastfed baby malnourished
if the mother is with them...if a weak baby is unable to breastfeed why
would they not be receiving expressed milk...) and on top of it all it
promotes powdered formula as if it's an innovation instead of a danger, and
implies that clean water is easily accessible to mix it.

If anyone knows more about this "LifeMilk" or whether World Vision has ties
to a formula company - since it seems to be promoting this product
vigorously - I'd be interested.

text from the website:

"Donate LifeMilk & More for Hungry Childen"

"In some of the most extreme cases of severe malnutrition, children are so
weak they reject their own mothers' milk. While breastfeeding is always the
best way to build a small child's strength, there's an innovation that can
save tiny lives at risk: LifeMilk*. Your gift multiplies 4 times to provide
access to life-saving products like LifeMilk, plus other essential
healthcare interventions that help save children's lives.

"LifeMilk is a super-nutritious food that is packed with the vitamins and
minerals starving infants need to regain strength - and survive. This
high-energy therapeutic milk is easily digestible for even the most
severely malnourished babies. And because it comes in powder form, it can
be easily distributed to the most remote parts of the world, where it is
simply mixed with clean water.

Any amount you give multiplies 4 times in impact to provide life-saving
healthcare and breakthroughs like LifeMilk to hungry children around the
world.

*The term "LifeMilk" refers to the high-energy therapeutic milk F100 and
F75 and should not be confused with any other product of a similar name. In
most cases, World Vision receives F100 and F75 as a donated product and
funds raised through this appeal will be used to support programs that
administer the product as well as other vital health programs."

[by including the link I am not advocating that people donate]
