I have never liked the word "correct" when referring to latch or
most aspects of breastfeeding. I much prefer to refer to
"effective" which can be "more effective" or "less effective"
depending on many factors. First, it doesn't imply judgement of
what the mom (or baby) is doing. Second, it allows for individual
variation. I also like the expression "window of effectiveness"
which can vary widely. I see some latches that almost make me
cringe, and yet it is working perfectly for that particular mom and
baby. On the other hand, in some cases you can change the latch
only a "silly millimeter" and make a huge difference in both comfort
and milk transfer. What we teach now, including the asymetric
approach, may in the future prove to be less effective than a new,
as yet undiscovered, approach which will be more effectrive. By
using this terminology, we are not contradicting ourselves if we
take a new approach-only improving on what we teach based on more
experience or new information. Breastfeeding doesn't change, but
our understanding of how it works and how to make it work better are
in constant change.

Winnie
