Dear Jeanne and all,
I've been lurking for a couple of months and just had to speak up about this issue.
I lived in Austin for 15 years and worked at Brackenridge (the Seton hospital that was laying off 4 of the 6 LCs) between '93 & '96. The last few months I worked as the only LC for all three areas when Maryann H., RN IBCLC took some time off for the birth of her daughter. There was little support for me as the LC then, other than from the nurses on the floor.
I had been pleased and surprised at the increase in the size of breastfeeeding support after I had left. It is truly unfortunate that the gains made then are to be depleted.
I'm glad that NICU and the Children's Hospital (connected to Brack) will still have LCs, albeit part-time. When I was there, the majority of my time was needed and spent on the Postpartum floor.
I just wanted to send my condolences to those who have been affected, not the least of which are the mothers who have lost dedicated help for breastfeeding.
I have heard from another friend that the newer hospital off of north MoPac (I can't remember what they are calling it now) has been looking for an LC.
Good luck to y'all.
Sharon Coe LPN, IBCLC
