Hi Alicia,
Regarding adoptive nursing and production of milk, I had a nice discussion
with Chris Wade MD, who has been in a leadership role in the lactation
clinic for Kaiser in Riverside, CA. He has found that a woman who has never
been pregnant has a poor prognosis for making milk. Even a woman who had a
first trimester abortion has a much better likelihood of making milk. This
is probably related to lack of complete differentiation of breast tissue if
the woman has never been pregnant. As I recall, he also found that if he
can get an adoptive mom pumping for 3 weeks prior to the birth, and have
her pump q3hrs., by the 3rd week milk is seen ( again, in the women who
have experienced some degree of preg).. Hope this helps!-Anne Eglash
