I too am sensitive to the media's portrayal of breastfeeding and am always
fearful it will not be presented favorably.  Having said that, I have to say
I am becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the verbal attacking that
occurs on Lacnet.  A nonrespectful approach diminishes our professionalism
and does not encourage serious consideration of our viewpoints.
    I did see Dr. Phil's show, but did not see Jay Leno's.  Dr. Phil did make
an error regarding AAP's policy statement, but I felt it was not done
intentionally as he went on to mention other recommendations of breastfeeding
for two years and even longer. He did remark that this was not a
breastfeeding issue; as this was not an 8 year old who had been continuously
nursing since birth, but rather a child who had self weaned at 2 1/2 and now
5 1/2 years later, has resumed nursing.  Her mother stated that
intellectually she valued self weaning, but emotionally felt it difficult to
continue nursing.  He was responding to the mother's emotional need to disco
ntinue nursing not his opinion regarding an eight year old nursing.
