In response to Winnie, and others concerned about bone density with
breastfeeding:
I am currently doing research for a Master's in Exercise Physiology (and
eventually a doctorate) in the area of bone density and lactation.
From my literature search, I too belive that the bone density loss in
lactating mothers is merely TEMPORARY (shown in about 15-20 studies that
I've found). Long-term studies do show that post-weaning, bone density
pretty much is all gained back (and sometimes more). What has not been
shown so far, is that weight-bearing exercise could theoretically prevent
this temporary bone loss in bf'ing mom's. That is what I am currently
researching with 3 current breastfeeder's for now (and hopefully more
volunteer's later).
As far as I can tell, this issue is a very complex one, and further study
is definitely warranted Publicity about the issue is needed as well -
Breastfeeding appears not to be a threat to bones, but combined with weight-
bearing exercise, may be promoted as an enhancer (once the results are in).
If there are any others who have any knowledge on Exercise and bone density
in lactating mothers, then perhaps they would comment?
