I am several days behind on Lactnet reading, so please forgive me for bringing
up something that has already been adequately addressed, but I want to add my
.02 to the mom with the diabetic 3 y.o. My daughter was diagnosed with
diabetes at 10, and even at that age the doctor felt that for children it was
more important to avoid hypoglycemia than to have perfect control. And I knew
several people with very young children, all of whom would agree that it is
impossible and very frustrating to get young children to eat in any consistent
way. Breastfeeding is a very good, available quick fix for hypoglycemia (if
you still have a significant amount of milk) and also a great comfort for the
scary feelings of hypoglycemia. I also did some phone counseling with a
mother of a nursing 18-month old who had just been diagnosed with diabetes.
Her doctor encouraged her to keep nursing. Good luck. It was hard enough
with an older child, I can only imagine how hard it must be with a little one.
