I've seen several babies with hemangiomas and feeding difficulties. Two
issues to watch for are pain if the hemangioma is ulcerated, and
difficulty breathing if it is partially or fully blocking the nostrils
when the baby is latched on. Using positions that avoid pressure on the
upper lip if there is ulceration (which will show up as a dark, eroded
area) and those that allow the baby to let go in order to breathe as
needed if the nose is being blocked might help. The physicians can
prescribe some pain medication (timed so the baby gets peak relief at
the beginning of the feeding) as well.
