Avent's Norwegian Facebook page has advice in Norwegian from someone
calling herself 'Julie - breastfeeding specialist, Avent'
As a favor, another mother in our organization visited the site to
give me an idea of what is on it. I'm a tender soul and can only take
so much of this stuff. The first thing she found was this, my
translation from the Norwegian text on FB:
"Did you know that if you are going to freeze your milk or store it a
couple of days in the refrigerator, you ought to milk out circa one
teaspoonful of milk first, which you discard? In this way you reduce
the number of bacteria in the milk, something which also increases the
quality of the milk. The milk found outermost in the breast actually
contains microorganisms normally found on your skin. These
microorganisms, or bacteria, are not harmful, but it is desirable to
reduce the amount of them."

It doesn't specifically say to milk out by hand, but when expressing
is mentioned normally the word 'pump' is used, not 'milk out'; the
latter usually means hand expression. I guess letting that
bacteria-filled milk come in contact with the pump would be a no-no
too.

Anyway, I've never ever heard this advice before, so I ask you, is
this something I missed, and everyone else knows it, and if so, can
someone tell me what search terms to use to find evidence to support
the practice? It doesn't take much imagination to picture how many
mothers are heading to their freezers to discard expressed milk
containing 'microorganisms' - horrors.
