Hello,

I am working with a mother that currently has her baby hospitalized and I
am interested in how reflux is generally treated by doctors.

Baby was born at 5 lbs 10 oz full term csection.  Discharge weight was 5
lbs 4 ozs.  While in the hospital baby was supplemented against mothers
wishes (according to her).  On day 2 and 3 baby cried all night and
continued to have meconium stools.  On day 4 stools were green and mother
said that she had been limiting feeds to 5-7 minutes on each side "to
avoid gas".  I suggested that she not limit feeds.  On day 5 baby was
doing significantly better!  Baby was sleeping better and stools were now
the trademark yellow.  On day 6 baby stopped breathing during a feeding 3
times.  The baby was admitted to the local children's hospital with the
mother.  Reflux has been diagnosed.  Now the problem, the mother is being
told to offer small frequent feeds.  She really does not want to do this
because the baby cried so much when she was nursing her that way.  The
baby is now, at one week, 6 lbs 2 ozs.

Jack Newman recommends longer feeds for babies with reflux so I am not
sure what to advise this mother to do.  She really seems at the end of her
rope as she thought that breastfeeding was going so well and now feels
that it is being threatened.

Any input would be great!
