I was asked a question by a LC in a hospital setting regarding a mother who had a C/S who now has necrotizing faciitis at the incision. The pathogen is unknown at this point. She says different doctors are giving different opinions as to whether or not this mother should continue breastfeeding. From the reading I've done, it could be a number of bacteria, and it isn't the bacteria itself that causes the necrosis, but the toxins produced by the bacteria. The baby has already been exposed, the mother is making antibodies in her milk, and as long as the baby is healthy and FT, it should be OK to nurse the baby as long as the wound is covered, and handwashing precautions are taken.

Is this correct? Does anyone have specific information on this?

Thanks!
