. . . the most widespread thing I see is that moms want to start pumping
asap and frequently. I've never ever heard any nurse recommend no
pumping for a month.
They want to start pumping so that Dad (or Grandma) can feed the baby from a
bottle. I'm sure that's where it comes from because I hear it ALL the time.
They think they are going to sleep for several hours at night while someone else
feeds the baby. They don't realize that they will wake up FULL of milk (say
engorged!) if they skip a feeding. Therefore, those of us who work in hospitals
encourage the moms to delay the pumping & bottle-feeding for at least 2-4
wks. Our lactation consultants tell them that there aren't too many opportunities
to pump in the first few weeks, but we do give information about preventing &
treating engorgement & mastitis which includes pumping if needed. We believe
that they need to go home with written information (now if they will just read
it) and we do review it with them. Now, if we can get these moms &
significant others to attend a prenatal breastfeeding class & then we follow up with
them in the hospital, the infomation may be heard & properly interpreted.
