I love the phrase "milk-harvesting!" I am in Salt
Lake City where a frustrating number of women
artificially feed their babies expressed milk. They
see no difference. One expectant mother actually
called me through our local LLL help line to say she
had been reading about the importance of breast milk
and wanted to know where she could obtain this
"product." Another Leader laughed when I relayed the
story and said I should have replied, "Oh yes, we have
monthly meetings to discuss the marketing,
manufacture, and distribution of this product." This
mother clearly wanted to purchase human milk and hoped
I would put her in touch with a "modern day wet
nurse." Milk, not a relationship.

I agree with Jean, that it is a part of what we do to
educate mothers about the difference between
artificially feeding expressed milk and actually
breastfeeding. Otherwise we will continue to see more
mothers like the one who said to me a few years back,
“Don’t you know? It’s the new breastfeeding!” I want
to whisper back: “Same physiology…”

[OT, the mother above also commented that with any
luck the baby would arrive on the weekend and she
could be back on the job Monday. I feel I am seeing
more and more disembodied women. It is particularly
disturbing to see it in women who believe they are
taking a feminist stand in the world.]
