The point Nikki makes here - of letting gravity hold baby on mom, works whether mom is leaning to the side with baby wrapped around her (clutch) hold or lying back. It's whatever helps baby latch comfortably and mom not feel tense. But if someone is having to furnish a lactation room, there are some furniture types that are more conducive than others.

Subject: Best office chair for BN position

Dear Friends:

It was Diane Wiessinger who pointed out at a LLL healthcare professional conference presentation in 2009, that all the Victorian nursing chairs were slightly reclined! If you do a google search for "victorian nursing chairs"
, you'll see what she meant.

Dr. Suzanne Colson suggests that the mother recline to her chosen angle of comfort. I suggest the mother recline to the point where she doesn't have to use her hands or arms to hold the baby on her chest. Gravity is holding the baby on her chest, and then she has her hands free.

For an office, it might be cheaper and easier to have a examination table with its head pushed against the wall. Then piles of pillows could be use to tailor a comfortable and effect BN position, unique for each mother's needs.

warmly,

Nikki Lee RN, BSN, Mother of 2, MS, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI craniosacral therapy practitioner www.breastfeedingalwaysbest.com
