I am horrified by this latest proclamation that Domperidone is unsafe
because of some intravenous complications. I moderate an adoptive
breastfeeding website and have now for over 5 years. I have never seen
ONE woman with SERIOUS complications. I have only seen a handful that
had gastrointestinal complications or headache that was serious enough to
stop the drug and I am sure I have seen well over 1,000 women on the drug
at this point. This drug helps make breastfeeding a very real possiblity
for many women. The side effects of reglan are often too uncomfortable
and sometimes have long range serious complications. Most women will not
take or try it (as I did) and give up.
I am just beside myself. Does this mean that we will no longer be able
to buy it from overseas (as I do) or that the compounding pharmacies may
no longer make it or that the physicians prescribing it will be too wary
of complications and no longer consider it a safe alternative to reglan?
could it be that there are now so many women ordering this drug that the
formula companies actually see this as a threat to formula production??
I honestly cannot believe that there are that many women using it for
milk production or that many that have milk production problems that it
would truly interfere with formula sales? Or am I just naive??
If someone here is considering any action that might make the true story
come to light, please please let me know. Perhaps we should ALL email
20/20? I wonder if they might try to investigate not just a ling between
formula companies and the drug but also all the women who have taken it
and whether it truly has a potential for serious side effect. I have a
host of women that would join the fight!
