The other consideration which I'm not sure you're thinking about is what the 
second hand smoke does to baby's lungs.  Even if the parents don't smoke in 
the baby's presence, they do later breathe out little particles of smoke in 
every breath they exhale.  

Since parents do exhale when holding their baby, it's generally considered 
important that baby's lungs have the protective assistance of breastmilk with 
the anti-inflamatory and immune factors it contains.

Just think of all the germs that could pass through a baby's irritated lungs!
Even if the baby has some slight symptoms of nicotine withdrawal after 
weaning, the AAP thinks breastfeeding is an important protection the child 
needs!  (And one might think that between the age of weaning and the age of 
being able to buy cigarettes, any potential former addiction might have had 
time to dissipate?)
