I have a mom of a 7 month old who refuses to nurse. Mom often let relatives
give baby bottles on the weekends so that they could "participate" with the
baby. Her supply diminished when her period started, and baby was basically
latched onto the breast and not getting anything, according to Mom. Her
supply is improved with Domperidone and pumping, but now for the past couple
of months, baby won't breastfeed. Mom says baby screams and arches away from
the breast. I've not seen them, but have advised Mom to not force baby, to
change locations of where she sits, to try the bath routine with baby to
relax, etc. Due to the holidays, I haven't been able to observe the feeding
attempts, but will plan to go and see her in a couple of days. I've
suggested cranial sacral therapy, but wanted to ask if anyone had any words
of wisdom to share for a baby who won't take the breast. She accepts
breastmilk from a bottle quite contentedly, but Mom would like baby to accept
her breast again. I'd suggested cup feeding and Mom says baby likes it, but
still won't take the breast. So, she's been trying for the past 2-3 weeks to
get the baby to nurse, and baby continues to appear traumatized by the
breast. I suggested a process of undoing the "fear" and kinda going thru a
rebirth process. I've encouraged Mom not to force baby, but to gently nudge
and hold skin-to-skin. Any suggestions?
