....fa la la la la, la la, la LA!
Today I feel very grateful for the lap of Lactnet to climb onto when I need
to wail and rant!!!
I am now reviewing for our BF newsletter a freebie book which a major
manufacturer of infant foods, I'll call them Brand X, sends to all
responders to a coupon in another freebie book given to mothers in hospital.
It is 96 pages. Multiple cheery cartoon illustrations on every page,
smiling, walking, talking pears, chicken drumsticks, graters, potatoes, jars
of mushy baby food, and people with faces as waiters in restaurants, farmers
growing Brand X ingredients, Brand X kitchen staff, and solitary babies
eating, walking and talking. But wait a minute! Where is you-know-who?
You remember, MOM? She is portrayed no less than 6 times, each time as a
flesh-toned single breast prosthesis, disquietingly disembodied, and just
sort of strewn among other edible items wherever 'she' turns up. Meanwhile,
the plate of infant cereal has a jam smile and raisin eyes and a wooden
SPOON, for crying out loud, is PHOTOGRAPHED wearing a spaghetti wig and bean
eyes and macaroni smile. Am I supposed to think this is some kind of
oversight? That they couldn't afford to pay the illustrator to draw an
entire woman, just ONE breast? That they are trying not to be sexist and
imply that only women can breastfeed? Or trying not to be ageist, and imply
that infants are dependent on adults? Yeah, right.
