I am teaching my bf class next week and have been reading about the chart
with disadvantages and advantages. I have been using this chart also, and
like it very much, however, I have to report that I have never had an empty
box for "disadvantages to the baby". The three comments that I usually get
are HIV+ mother, toxins in the breastmilk, (remember that I live in
Switzerland, and that they were actually recommending to mothers in Germany
that they not breastfeed because of the high toxins in the milk for a few
years) and low milk supply (or baby not getting enough). Of course, it
gives me an opportunity to discuss these issues, but I am wondering if some
of the rest of you just aren't writing these down, thus coming up with an
"empty" box?
Secondly, the childbirth teacher that I teach with has a very nice "flow
chart" that she does with string showing the cascade of events with each
intervention in childbirth. When I mentioned a nice website on
breastfeeding to my class and said the word "flow chart", every man in the
room came to attention. I think that they must like "flow charts"! So, I
was thinking that this cascade of events could also apply to bf. Have any
of you used such a chart or have ideas for how this would work? Ideas
would be welcome. TIA
Smiles,
Merilee
