Hi Kim
Hartmann's research team found that milk volume remains static in individual
dyads (range from memory was 400 - 1800mls per day; all thriving infants)
between one month and six months. After that, once solids are introduced,
milk volume decreases. Unless your learned friend is suggesting that
methadone concentrates as volume decreases, his recommendation doesn't make
any sense.

production during extended lactation in women." Experimental Physiology 84:

Subject: [LACTNET] Latest on Methadone

Hi everyone,
I have searched in the archives and am not finding what I want. I need to
know what the latest research is saying on breastfeeding while on methadone.

I have the research from JHL but it is from 2004. Is there any more up to
date stuff out there ? We have a physician from one of our methadone clinics
in the area stating that "breastfeeding is fine until baby is six months,
then baby should be weaned as volume of milk is high enough that methadone
will affect baby. Also advised mother should avoid breastfeeding for 2 hours
after she has been given her methadone dose."
This makes no sense to me but I would like to have some up to date research
in my hand when dealing with this. Most of the information I have read deals
with the first weeks of breastfeeding. I know we should be asking for her
research for this statement but I would like to make sure I have all the
current knowledge myself beforehand.
Thanks in advance
