October is SIDS Awareness Month in the U.S. and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has a web site on this at http://www.cdc.gov/features/sidsawarenessmonth/ <http://www.cdc.gov/features/sidsawarenessmonth/>
Under “Reducing the Risk” they make no mention of breastfeeding. I find this outrageous and disheartening. It is true that if you click on a link to seek further information on “Ways to Reduce the Risk of SIDS and Other Sleep-Related Causes of Infant Death” you will then find “Breastfeed your baby to reduce the risk of SIDS” listed 7th on a list of 13 items. But it is not mentioned on the main page.

Our local health department is one of many that has embarked on a “Share the room - not the bed” campaign, and I would say it has divided our breastfeeding community and coalition. No one wants to see babies die, and we all want to keep them safe. But I find it very difficult to get those in the public health community to even read the differing opinions on the effectiveness of these campaigns.

I have compiled a list of resources of Safe Sleep to cover these various differing viewpoints for a breastfeeding symposium we in our local breastfeeding coalition are putting on next week. I had to keep it to one 2-sided page. The idea of sharing other viewpoints was still pretty controversial, even when I agreed to include the anti-bed-sharing positions. For those interested in this topic, here is my Resource List on Safe Sleep:
