I'd also be interested to know if there is any research on this.  I know
babies in Mali would be tied on their mothers' backs from 10 days of age,
and then their mothers would pound millet.  The baby's head would flop back
and forth against the mother as she pounded millet, and the kids would sleep
right through it.
