Hello all!

I have been lurking for several months now. I'm an RN who works at a
community hospital for the past 11 years. I sat for the certification exam
in July and just found out that I can now add the letters IBCLC to my
name!!!

Our hospital has about 2000 deliveries per year, yet we are just beginning
to establish a lactation department. (After years of begging and
pleading!!) We now have 3 IBCLC's. (One of whom is the unit coordinator
who is really too busy with administrative stuff to be very involved with
lactation issues.) That leaves the 2 of us.

Our first major hurdle is staff education. We have the typical problems
with this, like "inconsistent information" and "topping off a breast
feeding".

I'm feeling pretty good about presenting the evidence-based education along
with some videos. (Self attachment, positioning, proper latch-on) I will
have about 3 1/2 hours to spend with each group. (About 6-8 per group, all
RN's required to attend.)

I'm hoping to make this a time not only for learning, but also for fun. Do
any of you have any ideas of how to lighten the mood? I remember reading
somewhere about cupcakes that are decorated with frosting and candy to
represent different breast conditions. Does anyone have this? Anything
else along those lines? Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for all of your help. You may either place your reply
on the list or e-mail me privately @ [log in to unmask]

I've learned sooooo much from all of you! I can only hope to be as wise as
you all some day!

Have a great day!

Janet Kercher, RN IBCLC
