Hi! I have found that some women are sensitive to the amount of saturated fats in their diet when breastfeeding. If they cut out dairy fats and decrease meat fats, it can make a difference when they have recurring plugged ducts or even mastitis. If they cut way back on the saturated fats until eveyrthing is cleared up, then gradually increase the amt. that they consume, until they start to notice any symptoms, and then they know to eat a little less than that.

I personally had this issue. With my first child, I had mastitis 5 times in 8 weeks. This was many years ago :), and no one could figure out what was going on. They finally sent me to a "breast specialist" who told me all I could do is stop breastfeeding. I didn't know any better, and it had been the worst time of my life--so I quit. When I was due to have my second child, I spoke to my midwife about the matter. She found something in a text book about saturated fats causing a problem for some mothers, and had me cut them way back as soon as my baby was born. Lo and behold, it worked! When I experimented by increasing the saturated fats in my diet, if I got too much, I would start to get sore....then I would cut back, and the tenderness would go away.

So, whenever a mother has plugged ducts or mastitis, I recommend she cut back on her saturated fats to see if it makes any difference.

Take care!
