>One question I couldn't answer him was
how on earth whales and dolphins manage to feed their young under water?<

Oh goodie, I can answer this one because I was reading about it yesterday in
Jelliffe and Jelliffe, Human Milk in the Modern World (1979). Underwater
sea mammals have a specialised milk ejection reflex. To quote "the [blue]
whale calf has cream pumped into it rapidly". Seals (who don't feed
underwater but share the need for adaptation in the infant in cold
conditions) are described as recieving 'an oral fat transfusion'.

In an article in Science and Medicine, Nov/Dec 1997, Hanson, L,
Breastfeeding Stimulates the Infant Immune System, there is a photograph of
a manatee with two calves suckling -- one on either side, underwater. Says
it comes from the National Audobon Society Collection.

I hope this enough info for your husband.
