In addition to what others have already posted, I would like to add
that regular use of xylitol chewing gum after meals has also proven
good in preventing caries.

Quite recently I read about a study that when entering school (ie at
6 - 7 years of age), 85 % of those who had used xylitol chewing gum at
daycare had completely caries-free teeth, 75 % of those who only
brushed their teeth (no xylitol) had no caries, and 56 % of those who
were at home (no daycare) had no caries. And not to forget about fluor
(either in tooth paste or tablets), and changes in diet, ie avoiding
sugars, juices, cookies, or such that might stick to the molar teeth
for a long time. She might also need to make sure other family members
(like grandmoms) and friends (babysitters) understand to avoid saliva
contact.

Her child already has got the mutans bacteria in her mouth, and they
are there to stay, so all the mom can do now is to make the living
conditions for the mutans bacteria as poor as possible.
