Thanks very much for this Janice. I've been monitoring the media response to
this earthquake since it happened and can say that the number of requests
for formula to be sent to Haiti is unprecedented. The job of managing these
donations in Haiti is going to be incredibly difficult.
Those of you who feel that this is an important issue (especially in the US)
might like to consider contacting UNICEF and asking them whether they are
going to speak out about the danger that formula donations pose to babies
and mothers in Haiti. You might like to let them know that the 2009 WBW
theme on breastfeeding in emergencies educated you about the importance of
preventing donations and that you are wondering why UNICEF is not taking a
more proactive approach on this issue (they have put out a joint statement
with WHO and WFP but that was written in technical language and has not been
picked up by a single media article as far as I am aware). They should be
aware that there are memebers of the public/donors who aware that there is a
BIG problem with these constant media calls for formula.
