Hi Anne. I am a very big fan of Kay Hoover's postpartum breastfeeding
diary/log. For those who have not seen it, the diary/log covers the first 7
days & lists goals for the number of feedings, voids & stools. It is very
simple to use: In each daily box each hour of the clock is printed for the
mom to circle feeding times. It also lists W's for wets & S's for stools in
each daily box to circle as appropriate. Example:
Day 3 Goals
12 1 2 3 4 5.... 8 or more feedings
W W W 3 or more Wets
S S 2 or more Stools

The moms in our hospital from all walks of life use it successfully, even
those with little education. We have printed this in the inside cover of
our breastfeeding handout. We also ask our moms to keep the diary until
they see their baby's physicians, which can be from a few days post hospital
discharge to several weeks & explain what the goals are beyond day 7. We
are considering adding a second week to the diary. On it we also include
our warmline & hotline phone numbers. If anyone does use this idea,
*PLEASE* credit Kay on your handout. It is not copyrighted but she has
asked to be credited, rightly so. Hope this helps.
