I think that we need to remember that moms in the hospital are not always
being seen by IBCLC or other breastfeeding professional, but it was a nurse
who told them "latch looks good". Also, it is still not known by all what
makes a latch "look good". There is still, "latch looks good, sure you hurt,
that's normal for the first couple weeks". I have had moms tell me the
"latch is good", but poor baby has short frenumlumn and latch only "looks
good" from a distance. The same is true for high palates, bubbles, etc. I
don't blame nurses by any means. They have moments to do a job that requires
more time. They are understaffed and multi-skill working. How many LC's have
to do other postpartum or baby care? I have learned to say, "maybe the
latch looked good those first days, but it could have changed" or something
that does not attack the observations of another. Actually, I have been know
to ask who said that and can tell by name if it was the hospitals lactation
staff or other care provider. Also, don't underestimate the selective recall
of postpartum moms.
