Dear Dr. Jen,

 

Don't beat yourself up.  You sound like such a caring, compassionate &
loving physician.  I only wish you were here in Oklahoma City.   In reading
Kathy Eng's post of the 18th, I certainly agree with her.  You have given
her all the correct information but you can't make her want to breastfeed as
much as you want her to breastfeed.  Kathy also said that some women are
just drawn to bottle feeding and your patient sure sounds like one of those.
She certainly supplements well, whether it's with EBM or ABM she's right
there with bottle in hand.

 

It always just breaks my heart when I finally have to just give up and say
"You've done your best, She's received "x" number of months of breastmilk
and that's a lot.  She got lots of immunities and all sorts of goodies from
that.  You are truly a great Mom.  Now, if it's best for you, we'll work on
changing you over to the bottle with formula."  Then, of course, I will
assist her with finding a formula that the baby will tolerate (not throw up,
have colic, diarrhea, etc), and to lose her milk supply.  The mean little LC
in me will actually be kinda' hoping for engorgement ;-)
