Hi Everyone,

I am looking for private responses from anyone who has started and run their
own Peer Counseling program. I helped with WIC PC program many years ago so
have a memory of how it goes and also have my own ideas on how I want to run
my program. As I sit here typing my printer is busily printing out the WIC
PC program that I picked up on-line. I am interested in any other programs,
or ideas on how to build and maintain an excellent program, including
handouts, marketing ideas and ideas for grants (who to approach and how to
write a grant).

I am taking my business upwards in a whole new direction. Most of you who
know me know I run a small private practice. I struggle financially and am
tired of doing so. I also am tired of not being able to help anyone who
cannot afford my fees (which are quite reasonable) and of hearing about the
many moms who don't even know LC services exist. I am in the process of
developing something much larger. I have found myself working with a
particular set of new moms who have run into the frustrating side of our
birthing practices and the subsequent BF difficulties that frequently arise
as a result. These are strong business women who have offered to volunteer
their time and efforts to help me grow my business in such a way that I can
offer my community a Peer Counseling Program, sliding scale (low to no cost)
In-Home Lactation Consults, a storefront, moms groups and educational
classes - and that is just the basic outline. Oh, and I will be able to
make a living for myself as well.

I am starting with the Peer Counseling program because I don't yet have the
funding for a storefront where I can do everything else, but I can do this
for only the cost of the printing of the program folders/handouts. I am
interested in any and all programs or information out there to assist a
program like I am planning. Anyone who has attempted something like this I
would greatly appreciate hearing from. I am thinking I will most likely set
up a non-profit to allow for grants, etc. If there are any other programs
out there that give grants to someone like me who is working to make a
difference in her community I need to know about them and how to contact
them.

This is a HUGE deal for me. A new adventure that I am committed to
embarking upon - a dream to fulfill. I want to make a difference in my
community on a much larger scale - and I'd like to be able to employ those
who want to make a difference as well. I look forward to any words of
wisdom, thoughts and ideas on how to proceed and where to find information.

Thank you!

Warmly,
Jaye Simpson, IBCLC, CIIM
