My daughter, now 28 years old, bf'ed until she was 3.5 years old. I
asked her once as an adult if she remembered nursing, and she said no.

However, when she had a baby herself, she had a hard time getting
BFing going smoothly. But she never once gave up. She surprised
everyone with her quiet resolve to keep on breastfeeding, through
grand-canyon-size cracks and inflammation, often in pain, sticking to
the regimen of compresses, salves, expressing, LC appointments, etc..
There was no conversation about it, she just did it. Eventually she
healed, and she and my grandson went on to happily and successfully
bf, until he weaned himself gradually at around 2.5.

I am convinced that my daughter MUST have remembered exclusively
breastfeeding, on an unconscious level. Thus it was such a
"no-brainer" for her, that when it was her turn, she couldn't imagine
making any other choice.

I think that protecting (and re-starting) this unconscious
intergenerational transmission of breastfeeding "culture" is yet
another reason why what you all do is so important.
