I also missed the beginning of this thread. I have read the WHO document,
and I am not clear how Dr. Williams came out with 47 mg%. A large part of
his document has to do with how we are not sure what the proper blood sugar
should be for newborns.

I would like to mention that I have been saying in conferences for many
months now, that if I were a diabetic woman, I would not like my baby to get
formula, even if the link with diabetes has not been proved 100%. How could
we avoid that? One would be to give the baby banked milk, a good
alternative. Another, suggested by an Algerian neonatologist when I was
involved in a conference in Tunisia, was to start an IV immediately in all
high risk babies and have them at the breast while the IV was running.
Finally, I was suggesting that if I were that diabetic woman, I would start
expressing colostrum about 38 weeks gestation. Even if I got only 3 or 4 cc
per day, by the end of two weeks, I would have over 40 cc (more than an
ounce) available, and would go into hospital holding that bottle of
colostrum and saying to the pediatrician, "Here give him this, not formula".
Of course with a lactation aid at the breast. So, the reason I'm mentioning
all this is that there is now one woman who actually did it, and it worked
just fine.
