As a step towards baby friendly we are about to eliminate pacifiers in our
newborn nursery/on the postpartum floor (not the NICU). We plan to include
a sheet in our prenatal package telling moms that pacifiers will no longer
be given out and if they wish their baby to have one they should bring it
to the hospital. I have the enviable task of writing a short cover-all
letter to explain to the staff (nurses, MDs, residents, secretaries,
cleaners (?!)) why we are doing this. I plan to include references on ear
infections, adverse effect on BF, etc. Anyone been this route and have any
words of wisdom? We are anticipating complaints... What about
circumcisions? What alternatives are in place to calm babies during this
procedure?
All ideas gratefully received!
