Nikki,
You wrote, "What is the point of it all?"

I think the point is to make money. The US Government, various institutions,
and industries have an enormous investment in biotechnology. The inventor of
the patent is Charles W Slattery from Loma Linda University. Loma Linda
School of Medicine has gotten millions from the NIH for research. Although I do
not know if Slattery has been or is funded by the NIH. There is an interesting
article written in the India Tribune about Dr. Satish M. Sood who works with
Dr. Slattery. The article is entitled "Artificial 'mother's milk' & infant's
future." The article states that "the reasons for not going in for
breast-feeding: women's choice, not enough milk, pesticides, drugs(antibiotics or
illegal substances), and smoking." They also state that "in their lab, the major
protein of mother's milk (ie. beta-casein) has been produced in significant
amounts from E. coli by cloning its gene."

I don't believe that biotechnology is "baby-friendly" and the point of all
this is to make things, so people have to buy things. And it is about biology
being a matter of "choice."
