It always is prudent to get the full story before assuming that people are
persecuting bfg mothers. I have not seen the photos of the mother bfg the
child. It is of course possible for breastfeeding to be portrayed
exploitively. Fiona Gile's new book (she is a prof of anthropology at Univ.
of Sydney and will speak at the ILCA conf) documents a whole industry of
lactation pornography. This was news to me, so anything is possible! All
the bfg community should do in a situation such as the one in Dallas (about
which we may have limited information) is point to the prevalence of
breastfeeding related art hanging in any museum in the world as evidence
that the pictoral representation or portrayal of bfg is not pornographic per
se. And certainly we can to point to legislation protecting mothers right
to bfg whereever she may be. It goes without saying we point out that there
is no debate about the value of human milk for the child of any age. Unless
people have actually seen the content of all the photos, however, I'd avoid
making specific comments about the family in this case. All we can do is
speak generally. If the Grand Jury has seen the photos and dropped the
charges, then clearly their content does not sound problematic. In some
ways, if these photos are ok and this case was just the hysterical reaction
of a photo processing clerk somewhere, the case will become educational and
may turn out to be beneficial. If the parents are exploiting their children
sexually, then monitoring them is appropriate.
