Hello Dr. Tieman,

The babe's weight gain of 5 oz per week, which works
out to be 150 gm/ week is acceptable if we use WHO's
standard of 500 gm/ per month or 125gm/week (Dr.
Felicity Savage King's "Helping Mothers to
Breastfeed") esp. in developing countries. FThe fast
growing ones can put on as much as 250gm/ week or more
than 8 oz/ week. The baby is gaining, tho' not as fast
as those in her cohort. She may either be a "slow"
sucker" or her mum might be a "slow producer". It's
tough to ebm when she's back at work and having to
juggle her work schedule with her ebm and
breastfeeding at home. She will need to work
"overtime" to start her milk bank now - expressing
whenever she can and with whatever she can - so that
she can have extra in storage for her little one in
times of low milk supply or when she has no time to
pump. Hope this helps!
