There is nothing magical about looking for MRSA in the breast; you do a
culture and sensitivity just as for any other staph strain.
I know of one documented case in which a mother with an MRSA abscess nowhere
near her breast, had positive breastmilk cultures for MRSA. It was
recovered from every place on the mother's body cultures were taken from,
including her milk. Her baby was on a respirator because of prematurity and
the baby also cultured positive for MRSA on skin and from the trach tube.
The baby did not become ill. The neonatologists recommended feeding the
baby banked donor milk and discarding the mother's milk until she was
treated and tested negative for MRSA. I don't know what the final outcome
was other than that both mother and baby recovered.
